Find Wi-Fi Password From Windows & macOS

Did you lose the password to a Wi-Fi network? Now you’re wondering if you can figure out what it was? If you have a Windows or macOS device that still connects to the Wi-Fi network in question and has the password stored, you may be able to recover it using these steps.

Option 1 – Windows 10 & 8

  1. Select the “Start” button, then type “command“.
  2. Right-click “Command Prompt” then select “Run as Administrator“.
  3. Type the following, then press “Enter“:
    netsh wlan show profiles
  4. A list of Wi-Fi networks the computer has connected to will appear. Note the profile that refers to the Wi-Fi network you want the password for.
  5. Type the following, then press “Enter“:
    netsh wlan show profiles name=nameofprofile key=clear
  6. Under “Security Settings” there should be a field called “Key Content” that will reveal your Wi-Fi password.

Option 2 – Windows 10, 8, & 7

While connected to the Wi-Fi network for the password you would like to reveal, follow these steps:
  1. Open “Control Panel” > “Network and Sharing Center
  2. Select the Wi-Fi connection as shown next to “Connections“.
  3. A “Wi-Fi Status” window will appear. Select the “Wireless Properties” button.
  4. Select the “Security” tab.
  5. The Wi-Fi password will be shown in the “Network security key” field.

Option 3 – macOS

  1. From the Desktop, select “Go” > “Utilities“.
  2. Open “Keychain Access“.
  3. Under “Keychains“, select “System“.
  4. Under “Category“, select “Passwords“.
  5. Open the network for the Wi-Fi network password you wish to reveal.
  6. Check the “Show Password” box.
  7. If prompted for a credentials, type the username and password for an admin account on your macOS computer.
  8. The Wi-Fi network password is displayed.
